Dang it.
We hate being the bearers of bad news, but the TOPPING D70s has reached its end of life. If you're looking for a comparable DAC, we think you'll love the TOPPING D90SE.
The D70 gets the MQA treatment
In 2019, TOPPING released the D70 hi-res DAC. It impressed reviewers with its exceptional cleanliness and level-straight linearity. Audio Science Review gushed : “The TOPPING D70 came dangerously close to unseating every other DAC.” (Ultimately, it didn’t, but only by just a few objective decibels.)
TOPPING’s back in 2020 to release an updated version of the D70: the D70s. Users can expect the same exceptional cleanliness, linearity, and other benchmarks as the D70, because the D70s retains most of its predecessor’s hardware. Where it differs is its ability to decode MQA, its standard inclusion of Bluetooth (instead of as an add-on), and its all-new XMOS XU216 microcontroller, which can decode digital files with far less jitter.
2 x AK4497 DAC
The AKM AK4497EQ DAC (digital-to-analog converter) chip achieves the industry’s best noise performance, with a THD+N of -116dB and an SNR of 128dB. Simply put, you’d have to crank the D70s louder than a literal jackhammer before hearing distortion or noise of any kind. Additionally, it features 6 digital filters, which slightly adjust the sound qualities.
MQA Decoding
The D70s features full MQA-decoding, delivering the best possible version of your music. MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) files contain the full, uncompressed information of the original master recordings. MP3 files, on the other hand, contain just 10% of the original information. That’s one-tenth of the nuance, depth, and richness that the artist intended for you to hear.
Bit-perfect audio transfer
The XMOS 16-core XU216 microcontroller converts even the highest quality digital files to analog voltage without the timing deviations that result in distortion. This is especially important for converting MQA and other ultra-hi-res files. Local clocking, asynchronous USB audio transfer, and PLL network clock recovery ensure low jitter, high-quality audio capture and playback.
State-of-the-Art Bluetooth
Boasting Bluetooth 5.0, the D70s supports 24-bit transmission of lossless codecs (AAC, SBC, aptX, aptX LL, aptX HD, and LDAC).
Run multiple amps at once
The D70s can be configured to run to XLR only, RCA only, or XLR+RCA. This final option allows you to run the D70s to two different amps, such as a TOPPING A90 and a DarkVoice 336SE, without having to plug and unplug cables every time you want to jump from one amp to the other.
Fully-functional remote
The D70s comes with a fully-functional remote allowing you to control every aspect of the D70s from volume to gain to user settings. You can even use it to switch output modes, which is useful if you’re running multiple amplifiers.
Six input interfaces
The D70s has six input interfaces, allowing you to connect multiple devices at once: a laptop or computer through USB, a phone or tablet via bluetooth, a balanced source via AES, and more. Switch through them on-the-fly with the included remote control. Both USB and IIS support up to 32bit/768kHz & DSD512 native. AES, optical, and coaxial support up to 24bit/192kHz. Bluetooth supports 24bit/96kHz.
AK4118 receiver for ultra-low jitter S/PDIF input
The AKM AK4118 is a digital audio transceiver that supports coaxial, optical, and AES signals. Supporting up to 24bit/192kHz, it achieves the lowest jitter of any S/PDIF receiver currently on the market.
